9:10 Lecture 2 September 1999
| The Roma Victims of Nazi Persecution and Austrian Politics of Compensation |
|
| Traditional clichés and prejudices against the so-called "gipsies" have positioned them at the lower end of the social hierarchy. This positioning materialised also in their recognition as victims and restitutions. Only since a few years, this situation has begun to change, while at the same time the struggle to be accepted as an ethnic minority has continued. Moreover, the tragic murder of 4 Roma in Oberwart in february 1995 has raised a certain awareness about the issue in the media - if only for a short period of time. |
