Lynn Gaubatz. The piece I will play is called "Suite for Bassoon Solo, opus 77" by Egon Wellesz. In a website entitled: "Vertreibung und Exil oesterreichisch-juedischer Komponisten" is the following biography for Egon Wellesz: Der 1885 in Wien geborene Komponist und Musikologe Egon Wellesz, Schüler von Arnold Schoenberg und Anhaenger der Zwoelftontechnik, genoss weit über die Grenzen oesterreichs hinaus grosses Ansehen. Er galt als einer der bedeutendsten Experten auf dem Gebiete der byzantinischen und vorderorientalischen Musik und publizierte bereits vor seiner Emigration nach Grossbritannien im Jahre 1938 in der Times zahlreiche Artikel ueber das Musikleben in Wien. Noch im Jahr des "Anschlusses" wurde sein bekanntestes Werk "Prosperos Beschwoerungen" von den Wiener Philharmonikern unter der Leitung von Bruno Walter uraufgefuehrt. Ab 1939 lehrte er in Oxford, wo er sich der musikwissenschaftlichen Taetigkeit widmen und sein kompositorisches Schaffen fortsetzen konnte. Er starb 1974 in Oxford.

Miss Gaubatz was the Bassoon Professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria for two years, and in 1997 joined the Salzburger Mozart-Solisten, an virtuoso chamber music ensemble based in Salzburg. In December 1997 she was a featured soloist at Schloss Leopoldskron for the Salzburg Seminar on Music for a New Millennium: The Classical Genre in Contemporary Society. Miss Gaubatz has been principal bassoonist under Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Georg Solti, and others with orchestras in Austria, Germany, Spain, Venezuela, and the US. In 1986, fellow soloist Barry Tuckwell invited her to be Principal Bassoonist in his Maryland Symphony Orchestra, a position she held until 1990. She has given master classes in Salzburg, Seville, Málaga, Caracas, Vienna, Boston, Chicago, Washington, Madison, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe, and currently teaches bassoon and chamber music at the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC.
